The challenge: controlling costs and risks in a cloud infrastructure
A cloud infrastructure can grow quickly, but without governance, automation and consistent security practices, costs become difficult to control and risks increase. For organisations with small teams, this challenge is even greater: they need to keep operations available, implement improvements and respond to security requirements without becoming dependent on manual processes.
The challenge was to support an operation hosted on Google Cloud Platform. The need included infrastructure maintenance, a security assessment and opportunities for cost optimisation. The complexity of the environment, compliance requirements and existing security policies required a specialised response, working closely with the client’s team.
The challenge was to create DevOps capacity that could analyse the infrastructure, identify improvements and implement changes safely. It was necessary to review Infrastructure as Code practices, strengthen the architecture according to widely adopted standards and implement cloud provider security recommendations. At the same time, the intervention had to preserve service continuity and make operations more efficient.
The approach
A DevOps specialist was provided on a time-bank model, complemented by regular service management. This approach made it possible to adjust capacity to the pace of business needs and focus efforts on high-impact interventions. The team worked in collaboration with several international teams, using fast communication and integration processes.
The intervention followed security and quality best practices and used current tools from the cloud ecosystem. The infrastructure review identified simplification opportunities, strengthened governance and improved configuration management. Work on Infrastructure as Code helped make the environment more consistent, auditable and prepared for future evolution.
Results
The result was a 50% cost reduction. All security improvements recommended for the Google Cloud environment were implemented, and an Infrastructure as Code review was carried out in line with widely adopted architecture standards.
This case demonstrates how a specialised DevOps team can be provided, even when the need does not require a large permanent structure. The value lies in combining GCP, security, automation and governance expertise with a flexible, results-driven capacity model.
